We drove through a mist on our way to Channel Islands Harbor this morning. It was a mild, calm morning. We had decided to launch from the EZ Launch area on the Public Kayak Launch dock. The EZ Launch is ideal for plastic boats, but scratches the hull on anything else. We were surprised to see Jason Miller join us for a paddle. We had not seen him since last year. Jason, Lance Pillsbury, Peter O'Sullivan, Bob Glickman, and myself paddled this morning. Lance and Bob were soon outdistancing us and we saw them head south out of the channel but did no learn where they ended up paddling to. Jason was easily getting his sea legs back as we paddled through the harbor and out into the pond. Conditions were calm with enough movement of the water to remember we were on the ocean. An easy trip around the breakwater and we decided to show Jason the construction site for the new hotel on the island. As we paddled into the harbor Jason and Peter asked when Joe Barrett's Paddle Out was. Checking the calendar, it was almost like the had ESP, since it was the 5th of June last year. Nice to remember our old friend! After checking the hotel construction site we decided to call it a day. It was nice to paddle with Jason again. That is the way it was this first Sunday, and Strawberry Full Moon in June, 2023. |
